Percent of row and column total
In a pivot with both Rows and Columns, right-click a value and choose Show Values As, % of Row Total to make each row add to 100% (the mix inside each row), or % of Column Total to make each column add to 100% (where each column's total comes from).
Syntax
Right-click a value > Show Values As > % of Row Total | % of Column Total| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
% of Row Total | Cell divided by its row's Grand Total; rows sum to 100% |
% of Column Total | Cell divided by its column's Grand Total; columns sum to 100% |
% of Parent Row / Column Total | Base is the subtotal of the enclosing group rather than the whole row or column |
Examples
Rows: Region. Columns: Product. Values: Sum of Units (% of Row Total)Result: For each region, what share of its units each product makes up; every region row ends in 100%.
Rows: Region. Columns: Channel. Values: Sum of Revenue (% of Column Total)Result: For each channel, how its revenue splits across regions; every channel column ends in 100%.
Rows: Department, Level. Values: Count of Employee ID (% of Parent Row Total)Result: Each level as a share of its department's headcount.
Common mistakes
- The Grand Total column shows 100% on every row and that looks wrong: it is correct for % of Row Total; the row total is the base.
- You picked % of Row Total but wanted the column mix: swap to % of Column Total, the names refer to which total is the base.
- Percentages show #DIV/0 style blanks: an empty row or column total has no base; filter out empty items.
